AMD inaugurates its largest global design center, Technostar, in Bengaluru, India, marking a significant leap in semiconductor technology and innovation, with a focus on AI, machine learning, and next-generation computing.
AMD, a global leader in semiconductor technology, recently inaugurated its largest global design center in the bustling tech hub of Bengaluru, India. This monumental event, held on November 28, 2023, marks a significant milestone in AMD's commitment to expanding its research, development, and engineering operations, particularly in India. The state-of-the-art AMD Technostar campus is a testament to the company's focus on innovation and its recognition of India's growing prominence in the global tech industry.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Cabinet Minister for Railways, Telecommunications, Electronics, and Information Technology, Government of India. His presence underscored the importance of this development in the context of India's semiconductor program, which has been receiving robust support under the leadership of Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Vaishnaw, highlighting the significance of this move, said, “India's semiconductor program launched under the leadership of Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi lays strong emphasis on supporting the design and talent ecosystem for semiconductors. AMD setting up its largest design center in Bengaluru is a testament to the confidence global companies have in India.”
The new campus plans to host approximately 3,000 AMD engineers in the coming years. These engineers will delve into the design and development of cutting-edge semiconductor technology, encompassing realms such as 3D stacking, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and more. This initiative is part of AMD's ambitious $400 million investment plan in India over the next five years, announced at Semicon India 2023. The AMD Technostar campus is set to become a center of technological excellence, focusing on developing a range of leading-edge products. This includes high-performance CPUs for data centers and personal computers, advanced GPUs optimized for both gaming applications and data center operations, as well as adaptive System-on-Chips (SoCs) and Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) for use in a variety of embedded devices. These initiatives are geared towards reinforcing AMD's leadership across these diverse but interconnected areas of semiconductor technology.
Mark Papermaster, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of AMD, expressed his enthusiasm for this significant expansion. Spanning an impressive 500,000-square-foot area, the AMD Technostar campus is more than just a hub for technological development. It is a celebration of Indian art and craft, with thoughtfully designed huddle spaces and conference rooms aimed at fostering collaboration and creativity among employees. The facility features modern R&D labs spread over 60,000 square feet, along with a large demo centre that allows visitors to experience AMD's innovative products and solutions firsthand. The campus also boasts a cafeteria acoustically engineered to host gatherings of more than 2,000 employees, further emphasizing the company's commitment to the holistic well-being of its workforce. This commitment is further manifested in the inclusion of a gym and a yoga centre, promoting a balanced approach to health and wellness.
Jaya Jagadish, India Country Head of AMD, reflected on the journey of AMD's presence in India, “The India Design Centre started with a handful of employees in 2004. Today, 25% of AMD’s global workforce is located in India and they support the development of AMD leadership products for data center, gaming, PC, and embedded customers. This new facility marks the next milestone in our growth journey to be a significant contributor in the advancement of semiconductors.”
