Foxconn and Porotech Forge Strategic Alliance to Propel AR with Advanced MicroLED Display Technology

Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn), globally recognized as the world's largest electronics manufacturer, and Porotech, a frontrunner in GaN-based semiconductor technology, have announced a strategic partnership. This alliance is set to expedite the commercialization of MicroLED Microdisplays specifically designed for augmented reality (AR) applications, setting the stage for what could be the world’s first complete, viable supply chain in this domain.

The partnership is a fusion of Foxconn’s proprietary technologies in areas such as semiconductor wafer manufacturing, packaging, IC drivers, CMOS backplanes, module assembly, and system assembly, with Porotech’s innovative PoroGaN® MicroLEDon-Silicon (uLEDoS) and Dynamic Pixel Tuning® (DPT®) technologies. This collaboration is targeting the creation of ultra-high-density, energy-efficient MicroLED Microdisplays that are expected to revolutionize AR applications, wearable technology, and smart devices.

MicroLED technology, particularly for AR applications, poses a significant challenge due to its multidisciplinary nature, involving semiconductor wafer manufacturing, hybrid bond, IC design, optoelectronics, quantum physics, and optics. Integrating these diverse fields has been a slow process in the past, as no single company previously possessed such an extensive portfolio of expertise.
